A Study on Regional Variation of the Cause of Death in Korea


Abstract
This study investigates the structure and the annual variation of the cause of death by region and sex in Korea.
Data had registered to National Bureau of Statistics were analysed based on 1,572,602 deaths from 1981 to 1988, which was classifiable according to ICD(international classification of death).
On the purpose of the study, the cause of death were classified into three different criteria : 5groups to find out the trend of cause of death, 17 major classification to compare the structure by region and year, and 32 special classification to choose ten leading cause of death by region, sex and year.
Direct, and indirect standardization methods were used to compare mortality rate of the cause of death by region and year.
The data showed that the cause of death structure has been varied by region, sex and year curing last 8 year.
Fist, mortality rate from motor vehicle traffic accidents and chronic diseases increased rapidly since 1981. Death5 due to infectious and parasitic dieases were decreased while death from injury and poisoning, chronic and min-made dieases including malignant neoplasm, and complications of pregnancy and congenital anomalies were increased.
Second, inculding respiratory tuberculosis and pneumonia, ten leading causes of death were more than 80% out of total deaths. Mortality rate from respiratory system increased in both sexes in Seoul and male in Kyonggi while others decreased.
Third, the variances of mortality rate by death were high due to low proportion of doctor¢¥s diagnosis of death.
